Exciting line up announced for town centre event space launch

Full arches (900x600)

The full line up has today been revealed for the launch of Gateshead's newest events space, which is tipped to bring crowds to the town centre.

Taking place on Sunday 24 May, 11am to 3pm, the event will mark the opening of the borough's vibrant new scene for pop-up events in the Railway Quarter.

The space has recently been given new life thanks to the installation of vibrant artworks by local mural and graffiti artist MarkOne87 that have proved a hit with locals.

Both the event and the artworks have been made possible thanks to funding from North East Mayor Kim McGuinness.

Lindsay Murray, Service Director for Economic Development and Regeneration, shared:

"We can't wait for Gateshead people to see how brilliant this vibrant new space will be for top quality events which will be hosted all year round. This weekend you'll see pop‑up food stalls with the best of local produce, performances and outdoor workshops.

"Bringing people together around culture is part of our plan to regenerate Gateshead town centre and forms a central part of our bid to become UK Town of Culture."

Those stopping by can expect to be spoiled for choice with food and drinks provided by Gateshead Food Partnership, Integration Station and Samosa Sisters who'll be cooking up their signature dishes.

There'll also be the chance for visitors to get involved in hands-on workshops. On the bill are street art sessions with MarkOne87, Toby Heaps and Chris Fleming - the artists who helped transform the space.

Locals can also try their hand at making tote bags inspired by Thomas Bewick - a local legend who features in the artwork - with Orbis Community, textile workshops with Bianco Perry, fresh flower posy designing with Bloomhead, DJ lessons with Northern Pulse, and even puppet making with Life and Limb Puppets.

Entertainment will also be in good supply with musical performances from Gateshead College students, and by youngsters from the Good Vibes and Arches.2 DJ projects.

Members of Integration station will be showcasing some of the 19 communities they represent. This will include food from different cultures, an Eritrean coffee ceremony, wood whittling and veggie cooking workshop.

Beyond the initial date, the council is planning a series of events which will see Gateshead Food Festival on Sunday 2 August and other family-friendly activities bring fresh energy and visitors to Gateshead town centre.

The new space and events form part of the council's ambitious regeneration plans and growing momentum to transform the town centre.

In recent months, the council has been awarded internationally-recognised Purple Flag status for their bold vision for regenerating the town centre as well as launching a bid for Town of Culture 2028, backed by the local creative community.
