Gateshead Council has today announced plans for its Summer of Fun beginning this July. Taking place across the town centre, the exciting programme will see free, family-friendly events run throughout the school holidays and into September.
With funding from North East Mayor Kim McGuinness and in partnership with Trinity Square and The Glasshouse, on the bill are events including magic shows, a food festival, street circus and more.
The festivities are set to give families a summer to remember, bring a new buzz to the town centre, and provide a welcome boost for local businesses.
Lindsay Murray, Service Director Communities and Culture, shared: "We're delighted to announce our plans for Gateshead town centre's Summer of Fun. Everyone from gamers to foodies will find something to get excited about.
We've had some brilliant events in the area already this year, and now we've got even more lined up to highlight that, despite the ongoing works to the local road network, Gateshead town centre remains open for business. We'd encourage residents to join in with these free events - they're going to be so much fun."
The council is encouraging families to make the most of seasonal offers on public transport throughout the summer to get to the events. Activities on the line up are a short walk from Gateshead Interchange, with kids travelling free on the Metro and local buses when with a fare-paying adult.
Sharron Ashurst, Centre Manager for Trinity Square, said: "Trinity Square hosts a wide range of free, family-friendly events throughout the year, but this summer we're especially excited to partner with Gateshead Council to make the most of the opportunity for local families. Together, we're bringing an even greater selection of high-quality events right to their doorstep, making it easier than ever to discover, enjoy and take part in something special."
The Summer of Fun follows in the footsteps of several recent events hosted by the council that have proved popular amongst residents and form part of its ambition to regenerate the town centre. Earlier in the year, the launch of the Gateshead Arches pop-up space and a meet and greet with famous cartoon characters saw crowds flock to the area.
