Gateshead Exchange recently partnered with Lord Lawson of Beamish Academy to host a vibrant Careers Fair aimed at supporting Year 11 students exploring alternatives to sixth form.

With around 70 students in attendance, the event provided a valuable opportunity to learn about apprenticeships, vocational training, and direct employment routes. Organisations were invited to share insights into their sectors, job roles, required skills and qualifications, and their own career journeys.

Lord Lawson of Beamish Academy took the lead in organising the attendance of On Point Apprenticeships, SETA, and Newcastle College, ensuring students had access to expert guidance on training and development opportunities across engineering, education, and apprenticeship pathways.

In addition, Gateshead Exchange welcomed a strong lineup of employers including Nissan, Suez, Jewson and Travis Perkins, and Gateshead Council's Recruitment Team, who engaged with students through talks and interactive sessions. Each organisation showcased the breadth of opportunities available and offered practical advice on how to enter and thrive in their respective industries.

Claire Braban, Careers and Enterprise Adviser for Lord Lawson of Beamish Academy shared:

We recently had a Transition Day for our Year 11 students, where one group of students who are wishing to come to sixth form got a taster of A Level lessons. The other group of students who are interested in college and apprenticeships were able to visit our min-careers fair and talk to employers and training providers to find out about apprenticeships and college courses. Students now have a better understanding of employer expectations and about some of the opportunities that are available in the local labour market. We are very grateful to all of the employers who supported our school, and in particular, Zoe Bell, Social Value Co-ordinator, who helped us reach out to local employers and make the afternoon a success!

The Careers Fair highlighted the power of collaboration between education and industry, and Gateshead Exchange continues to be a vital platform for connecting local talent with future employers.
