Swift action secures closure order to protect residents

Closure order

Residents in Gateshead have been reassured after recent decisive action by the council to address antisocial behaviour issues at a property in Cambourne Grove.

Following reports of ongoing issues, we reacted rapidly with a coordinated response to protect the local community, by securing a temporary closure notice on the property, before successfully applying for a full closure order at South Tyneside Magistrates' Court the very next day.

Council officers, alongside Northumbria Police's Neighbourhood Policing Team, attended the property shortly after the hearing to serve the legal documentation and secure the address. Notices have now been clearly displayed at all entrances, warning that entry is strictly prohibited.

Regular patrols will be carried out to ensure compliance, with authorities taking a zero-tolerance approach to any breaches. Entering the property without authorisation is a criminal offence, and anyone found inside faces arrest.

Samantha Allcott, Strategic Director for Housing, Environment and Healthy Communities praised the swift partnership working that led to the outcome:

"This action shows how seriously we take the safety and wellbeing of our residents. Working closely with our partners in the police and the courts, we have acted quickly to shut down activity that was causing concern in the community. We will continue to monitor the situation closely and take further action where necessary."

Appropriate support is being provided to the tenant, while legal teams explore next steps, including potential possession proceedings.

Residents are being encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspected breaches of the closure order to police immediately by sending Northumbria Police a direct message on social media or use the live chat and report forms on the Force's website.

For those unable to make contact via the above ways, call 101.

In an emergency situation, or if a crime is taking place, always ring 999.

We are committed to using all available powers to tackle anti-social behaviour and ensure neighbourhoods remain safe places to live. If you are experiencing antisocial behaviour issues, further information, as well as options for reporting it, are available on our website
