Grants to help people love where you live
Community and voluntary organisations were encouraged to apply for grants following the council being awarded £1.5m national Pride in Place impact funding. Applications submitted included proposals for a heritage trail and interpretation boards alongside plans to introduce new planters, plants and benches.
Councillor McElroy, Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport, said:
"We have fantastic community groups across Gateshead helping to take care of their neighbourhoods. They help to ensure our local environment is something we can take pride in and I'm delighted that we can give additional support so our volunteers can progress new and different ideas.
Over the last three years we have invested more in our environmental services as we know how important this is and to have the support of so many dedicated volunteers is invaluable as we need everyone to work together to help to love where you live."
Eileen Bell, from the Wardley Wombles, said:
"We're absolutely delighted to have received £500 from local community funding, which will support our group and help us continue delivering valuable projects in the area. We've also secured additional Pride in Place funding, which will go towards creating a new information board at the Jubilee Garden on the Bowes Railway line. The remaining funding will allow us to complete a number of community projects we've been working hard to bring forward."
