Council continues to clamp down on illegal fly tipping

Fly tipping green lane

We are continuing in the fight against illegal fly tipping by prosecuting offenders. Most recently three individuals have been fined as a result of our CCTV cameras providing evidence to enable prosecution and some excellent detective work of our enforcement officers.

A man has been fined £380 after an incident of fly tipping occurred at the car park in Green Lane, Gateshead.

CCTV footage showed a van belonging to David Bradford of Lobelia Avenue, Gateshead reversing into the car park at the time the offence occurred.

Bradford failed to attend an interview and provide information relevant to the investigation. As a result of the evidence, legal proceedings were successful, and magistrates issued a £180 fine with £200 costs awarded to the council.

We were made aware of another fly tipping incident where the driver of a grey van, with Wilde Plumbing and Heating livery on the side was witnessed dumping a number of cardboard boxes on the side of Coach Road in Gateshead, prior to setting these on fire.

Following a lengthy investigation the driver was identified as Adam Wilde of Avendale Gardens, East Boldon. Mr Wilde was interviewed by officers and denied any involvement in the incident.

However, in December, Mr Wilde pleaded guilty at South Tyneside Magistrates court to the offence of unlawful deposit of waste and was fined £1080 with costs of £627.80 totalling £1707.80.

A Gateshead man has also been fined after illegally dumping a large pile of waste on private land off Cross Lane in Dunston.

Evidence linked the waste to an address where Tyler Gouldburn, from Felling Dene Gardens, Heworth, had been responsible for clearing the waste.

Mr Gouldburn denied knowledge and was issued with a legal notice under the Environment Act 1995. He later pleaded guilty by post, and the court ordered him to pay a £400 fine and £200 costs.

We remain committed to keeping the borough clean and tackling fly tipping with the support of Gateshead residents.

Anneliese Hutchinson, Strategic Director for Economy, Innovation and Growth at Gateshead Council said:

"We won't tolerate illegal fly tipping and will continue to pursue prosecutions for those who break the law.

"Everyone deserves to live in a clean and safe neighbourhood. By working closely with residents, and partners, we're taking firm but fair action to improve the environment.

"We want everyone to love where they live, dispose of waste correctly, and report fly tipping in their areas to help the council maintain a clean community."

Residents are encouraged to report any incidents of fly-tipping. Illegal dumping is a criminal offence that can result in fines, legal action, and the seizure of vehicles involved. If someone is removing waste on your behalf make sure you know it's being disposed of properly.
