Over 100 new affordable homes for Birtley
More than 100 new affordable homes are being planned for Elisabethville in Birtley.
The plans from Gateshead Regeneration Partnership (GRP) seek full planning permission to deliver 106 new homes, with a mix of one, two and three bedroom houses and apartments.
Gateshead Council announced in December that GRP was bringing forward four new sites across the borough, and now planning applications for two of those sites are set to be decided.
Those two sites will be at Elisabethville in Birtley and over 130 homes at Brandling next to the A184 in Felling.
All of the homes at Elisabethville are intended by GRP to be affordable and the Council is aiming to acquire them as new Council homes.
Beyond the homes themselves, the development at Elisabethville will include new landscaping, sustainable drainage and improved access.
The aim is to create a well‑designed, welcoming neighbourhood that fits well with the surrounding area, helping to ensure long‑term quality and security for the residents.
Councillor Martin Gannon, Leader of Gateshead Council, said:
"We are committed to increasing the supply of good‑quality, affordable homes across the borough, and this development in Elisabethville represents a major investment in the future of Birtley.
"These new homes from Gateshead Regeneration Partnership will provide secure, well‑managed accommodation for our residents and help support a thriving, sustainable community.
"We are pleased to be moving forward with our partners to bring these plans forward - bringing a long empty site back into use for the good of the community."
Gateshead Regeneration Partnership (GRP) is a joint venture between Gateshead Council, Vistry and Home Group. GRP was created to bring forward new homes on sites that have previously been difficult to deliver due to financial and technical constraints..
John Collins from Gateshead Regeneration Partnership said:
"This partnership was created to unlock difficult sites and deliver homes where they are most needed. We are proud to be working closely with Gateshead Council to bring forward these important schemes in Birtley and Felling.
"The proposals show how collaboration can help transform unused land into high‑quality, homes that benefit residents for many years to come."
