Celebrate spring with a Colourful Community Parade
Everyone's invited to celebrate the arrival of spring at a vibrant parade in Saltwell Park on Saturday 28 March, bringing creativity, community spirit and colour to our communities.
The parade marks the 150th anniversary year of Saltwell Park, also known as The People's Park, celebrating its long history at the heart of the community.
The parade begins at 4pm and brings the Spring Festival to a close. The Spring Festival will feature music, arts and a range of spring-themed family activities in the park for the whole community to enjoy from 12noon to 4pm.
Local community groups, schools, organisations and businesses are encouraged to get involved in the parade by creating costumes, banners, decorated wheels, buggies or walking groups. A series of free creative workshops will be held ahead of the event to help groups make parade pieces. A drop-in workshop will also run on the day from 12-4pm for final preparations.
To support participation, a limited number of small grants of up to £200 are available to help groups in creating costumes, props or parade entries. Grants will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
Councillor Angela Douglas, Gateshead Council's Cabinet Member for Culture, Sport and Tourism said:
"Events like the Spring Parade are a wonderful way to bring our community together. Saltwell Park has been at the heart of Gateshead for 150 years, and this event celebrates not only the park's milestone anniversary, but also the creativity, diversity and community spirit of the people who live here. I'd encourage local groups, organisations and businesses to take part and help make the parade a memorable celebration."
Residents and families are also invited to get involved in the parade by joining the free drop-in costume and percussion workshop on the day or use the activity sheet to prepare for the parade.
Everyone is welcome to watch the parade at 4pm and enjoy the creativity and community spirit on display. Lasting around 20 minutes, the parade will loop around the lake and return to the event site, keeping the route accessible and manageable for everyone, including those with young children.
Community groups, organisations, schools and businesses interested in taking part in the parade and applying for a materials grant should contact: [email protected]
