New ambassadors to be honoured
At a Council meeting today (Thursday 19 March) Gateshead councillors agreed to award the prestigious honour making them the latest in a very select group of individuals ever to become Freemen of Gateshead.
They will be presented with their honorary titles at a special ceremony due to take place later in the year.
HMS Calliope, led by Commander D A King, is home to over 100 Royal Naval Reserves. Following a £3.1m renovation in 2016 the training centre saw the introduction of accommodation for 24 people, new classrooms and offices, new fitness suite, and improvements to the external appearance of the building. The facility is not only crucial to our Armed Forces but also our local communities.
Joseph Schleider, as founding Trustee of the Jewish Community Council of Gateshead and an elder statesman, is at the heart of the third largest Orthodox Jewish community in the UK. Joseph has played key role in helping to break down barriers and address inequalities faced by his local community.
Councillor Martin Gannon, Leader of Gateshead Council, said: "To become a Freeman of the Borough is the highest honour that we can bestow, and we're very proud to be able to recognise HMS Calliope and Joseph in this way. The people of Gateshead make us the unique, creative, ambitious and culturally diverse borough that we are all fortunate to be part of. Unity is something incredibly powerful and something at the heart of our decision today. Both HMS Calliope and Joseph want to support their own communities, which face unique challenges. However they also want to be part of our local communities and break down barriers that may exist with others. It's an honour to recognise them in this way."
They will join a very select group who have been chosen to be Freeman of Gateshead including Sir Brendan Foster, Sir John Hall, Sir Antony Gormley, Rt Hon Baroness Joyce Quin, Jill Halfpenny, Stephen Miller, Royal Northern Sinfonia, Mick Henry and David Olusoga.
