First celebration planned to launch town centre's newest event space
The first celebration planned to launch Gateshead's newest event space has today been announced by Gateshead Council. The vibrant festivities planned for Sunday 12 April will mark the completion of the borough's vibrant new scene for pop-up events, attracting new visitors to the town centre.
With funding from North East Mayor Kim McGuinness, the launch event will be hosted on the newly redeveloped forecourt in the Railway Quarter. From 11am to 3pm, residents will be able to enjoy food stalls, live performances as well as banner and print-making with local artists. There will also be the chance for visitors to try their hand at creating street art and DJing.
Cabinet Member for Culture, Sport and Tourism, Councillor Angela Douglas, shared:
"It's so exciting to be able to announce this event at Gateshead's newest pop-up venue. It's going to be a great occasion to mark the completion of the brilliant new artwork in the Railway Quarter and, more widely, our vibrant cultural scene across Gateshead.
"We want residents to come down, have fun and be part of something special."
The space has been transformed in recent weeks thanks to local mural and graffiti artist Mark One87, Creative Director of Elements Arts. The seven vacant railway arches on the former garage site have been renewed with bold street art that showcases the people, places and character of Gateshead, making a lively backdrop for the spectacular launch and future events.
The designs have been shaped by groups from Gateshead College, the Gateshead Recovery Partnership, Orbis Community and local businesses who all took part in hands‑on creative workshops with the artist.
Beyond the initial date, the council are planning a series of events which will see an Easter Egg hunt, food festival, family-friendly activities and more bring crowds to Gateshead town centre.
The new space and events form part of the council's ambitious regeneration plans and growing momentum to transform the town centre. In recent months, the council has been awarded internationally-recognised Purple Flag status in recognition of their efforts to make visiting the town centre a safer, more appealing experience, as well as launching a bid for Town of Culture 2028, backed by the local creative community.
