Helping you love where you live

2025environmentroundup

We wrapped up a busy and productive 2025, delivering thousands of essential frontline services that help keep the borough clean, green and safe.

From tackling fly-tipping to maintaining trees and supporting lost dogs, our teams have demonstrated their commitment to protecting local neighbourhoods and public spaces.

Over the past year, teams responded to:

  • 1,122 requests for litter picking
  • 2,477 graffiti issues
  • 518 reports of dog fouling
  • 360 stray or lost dogs
  • 6,169 fly-tipping incidents
  • 1,581 requests for tree maintenance
  • 3,000m2 of pothole repairs
  • 13,038 tonnes of recycling collected from blue bins
  • 6,459 tonnes of garden waste collected

The figures highlight not only the scale of services delivered but also the dedication of teams working year round, often in difficult weather and challenging circumstances to maintain the safety and appearance of the borough.

Councillor John McElroy, Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport said: "These figures show just how much work goes into maintaining our borough every single day to look after our communities. Our environmental teams face everything from harsh weather to difficult and sometimes hazardous conditions yet they continue to deliver an exceptional service with professionalism and pride. I want to thank every member of staff for their hard work, and I know residents across Gateshead appreciate the difference they make."

This year, our environmental teams remain committed to improving services, supporting residents, and enhancing the local environment for everyone.
