Scotswood Bridge to close Sunday 1st February for routine maintenance and inspection

The Scotswood Bridge will be closed to traffic on Sunday 1st February 2026, from 6am to 6pm to allow essential maintenance and inspection work to take place.

This work includes cleaning of gullies, checking expansion joints, repairs, refreshing of road markings, as well as vegetation clearance works on the approaches.

During the closure, consultants working on behalf of Gateshead Council will be carrying out a detailed inspection of the bridge's superstructure.

We are also working in partnership with Newcastle City Council who will make use of the closure to allow their contractor to carry out essential maintenance to their lighting infrastructure.

Although the closure is programmed to last until 6pm, we will be working hard to see if the tasks can be completed ahead of schedule and re-open the bridge earlier.

For the closure of the Scotswood Bridge, we will ensure the diversion route via the A1 Blaydon Bridge is clearly signposted.

The inspection of the Scotswood Bridge is part of a series of inspections we are completing across our area.

Earlier this month, our contractors worked on the Redheugh Bridge and the Blaydon flyover on the A695.

We have also been carrying out an inspection on the Gateshead Millennium Bridge in recent weeks.
