Transforming the town centre and quays

Gateshead Town Centre

We're making more improvements to the Railway Quarter with new public spaces, so it's not just the gateway to Gateshead but also a must-visit destination. The busy Gateshead Interchange will be modernised and improved with housing, public spaces and opportunities for enterprise. And the jewel in the crown will be the complete renovation and restoration of our magnificent Old Town Hall - by renowned regeneration specialists Capital & Centric - into modern homes and independent shops.

Southern Gateway

Demolishing the Gateshead Flyover and transforming High Street South will be the springboard for the creation of a well-connected urban quarter which every resident can be proud of. The Southern Gateway will create 1,000 new homes, including council housing, green spaces and community facilities.

Gateshead Quays and Baltic Quarter

The Baltic Quarter has potential for 1,500 homes and 20 acres of council-owned employment land, powered by renewable energy from the UK's largest urban solar farm and our innovative minewater system. At Gateshead Quays, we're aiming for a vibrant, leisure destination that creates long-term value for Gateshead and the wider North East region.

Revitalising Gateshead's waterfront

Metrocentre and Riverside

Working with the Metrocentre, our ambition for Metro Riverside is bold: the transformation of 500 acres of brownfield land along the Tyne into a sustainable community, with 3,500 new homes, 25,000m² of retail and leisure and extensive green networks. Centred around a reimagined Metrocentre, Metro Riverside will have strong transport links and waterside living.

Tyne Derwent Way

The Tyne Derwent Way, opened in 2022, is a 9 mile walking and cycling route linking established landmarks and trails from the town centre to Dunston Staiths to Gibside. Celebrating heritage, culture and wildlife, it improves access to green and open space and encourages healthy, active lifestyles for Gateshead residents and visitors. We will be making further improvements to enhance this glorious green asset.

Transforming neighbourhoods

Gateshead Regeneration Partnership sites

We're working in partnership with Vistry and Home Group to build 500 homes across the borough. We're now planning to build an additional 400 new affordable family homes on 4 more council-owned sites. Alongside much-needed housing, the project will provide skills and training opportunities to support local residents.

Felling Town Centre

Felling's town centre regeneration will deliver new affordable homes, an extra-care facility, plus green spaces and play areas, supporting local services and community pride.

3 sites, 1 vision: Askew Road West, Clasper Village and Dunston Hill

More than 570 new homes are being built on council-owned land on Askew Road, Clasper Village and Dunston Hill. Transforming brownfield sites with better transport links and green spaces, these developments are using our own land to ensure more affordable housing choices across the borough.
