Southern Gateway
Demolishing the Gateshead Flyover and transforming the southern end of the High Street will be the springboard for the creation of a well-connected urban quarter which every resident can be proud of. We are calling this area "The Southern Gateway" into the town centre, and it will be big enough for 1,000 new homes, including council housing, green spaces and community facilities.
A new future - the Southern Gateway
The redevelopment of Southern Gateway will redefine the heart of Gateshead, creating a modern, well-connected area to be proud of. Centred around High Street South, this ambitious regeneration will deliver up to 1,000 new homes, high-quality green spaces and welcoming public areas.
The removal of the Gateshead Flyover by 2026 creates a once in a generation chance to reshape our town centre with better connected, safe and accessible streets.
New homes will start being built in 2027, paving the way for family and intergenerational living and community facilities. With sustainable design, cycle-friendly routes and vibrant open spaces, Southern Gateway will breathe new life into central Gateshead, brining thousands of new residents into the centre, supporting local businesses and creating a thriving urban quarter for generations to come.
