Gateshead Town Centre

Railway Quarter, Gateshead

We're making more improvements to the Railway Quarter with new public spaces, so it's not just the gateway to Gateshead but also a must-visit destination. The busy Gateshead Interchange will be modernised and improved with housing, public spaces and opportunities for enterprise. And the jewel in the crown will be the complete renovation and restoration of our magnificent Old Town Hall - by renowned regeneration specialists Capital & Centric - into modern homes and independent shops.

Revitalising Gateshead's Railway Quarter

Our aim is to support the Railway Quarter in becoming a hub for culture, creativity and community in Gateshead, while also safeguarding existing businesses, attracting new ones, and enhancing public space for our residents and visitors.

Situated by the Tyne Bridge and High Level Bridge, the Railway Quarter project is supporting local businesses by creating high-quality pedestrian routes, public art and green spaces, making the area safe, welcoming and more attractive to residents and visitors alike.

Supported by more than £1.1m of investment from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and the North East Combined Authority, early works have included new lighting, new public spaces and signage, and in the next year there will be festivals and exciting murals at the historic Scott's Arches.

Old Town Hall - breathing new life into a Gateshead landmark

The redevelopment of Gateshead Old Town Hall will give new life to one of our town's most historic landmarks, transforming the it into a vibrant hub of homes, businesses, and culture.

As well as redeveloping the surrounding area, this project will deliver more than 250 new homes alongside 6,000m² of commercial space. By bringing more people into Gateshead, celebrating our heritage, boosting shops, services, and the evening economy, this development will help to build a thriving community right in our town centre.

With high-quality design, improved public spaces and opportunities for leisure and food venues, the Old Town Hall area will once again become a focal point for residents and visitors alike. This project is expected to be completed by 2029.

Safer and smarter travel at Gateshead Interchange

Gateshead Bus Station, at the Interchange, could undergo a major transformation, creating a modern transport hub that is safe, welcoming and well-connected.

Working in partnership with Nexus and Homes England, this project would replace the existing facilities at the Interchange to improve the experience of travelling to and through Gateshead.

Alongside enhanced metro and bus services, our plans for the area include new housing, high-quality public spaces and opportunities for enterprise and creative industries, all supporting a vibrant town centre.

This exciting development will deliver an improved and modern Interchange at the heart of our town centre, connecting people, places and opportunity.
