Residents encouraged to support campaign for ending violence against women and girls
We are encouraging residents across the borough to show their support for eliminating violence against women and girls in our communities.
White Ribbon Day (25 November) marks the beginning of 16 days of action intended to raise awareness and promote the elimination of violence against women and girls.
The theme of this year's campaign is 'It Starts with Men', highlighting that violence against women and girls is rooted in harmful masculine traits. Starting with men, we must address the attitudes and behaviours that contribute to a fear of violence for women in their day-to-day lives.
The council received 1028 referrals for domestic abuse support between April and September 2024. Of these referrals, 92.02% were for females, 7.98% were for males and 65% of all referrals involved a child or children in the household.
White Ribbon Day and the 16 days of action is not only about raising awareness, however, but also marks the opportunity to come together and pledge a shared commitment to action which will prevent violence against women and girls in Gateshead.
The council has White Ribbon Accreditation, which is provided to organisations that have shown dedication to promoting the aims and values of the campaign.
Councillor Angela Douglas, Chair of the Gateshead Community Safety Board said: "To eliminate violence against women and girls in our communities, we are encouraging as many residents as possible to make the White Ribbon Promise to never commit, excuse or remain silent about violent, aggressive or threatening behaviour.
Without support from men and boys to create real change in our society, it will be impossible to eliminate the fear that many women and girls live with daily.
By pledging your support, you are taking action to make women and girls in our communities feel safer and preventing the risk of violence against women and girls in future."
Make the White Ribbon Day Promise
Throughout the 16 days of action, the council will also be sharing local and national resources from partners that support the campaign. Please keep an eye out across the council's Better Health social media channels from Monday (25 November) to help share these vital messages.
