Innovative support service celebrates helping over 100 people into employment

IPS EVENT

A life changing and innovative service is celebrating their work to support over 100 people across Gateshead and South Tyneside into sustainable employment.

Gateshead & South Tyneside Individual Placement Support (IPS) is an initiative that matches potential job seekers with roles that suit their professional strengths and ambitions.

The programme is embedded into Humankind's existing drug and alcohol treatment services in South Tyneside and Gateshead by working with both local authorities to secure people employment as part of their recovery.

The service has reduced long-term unemployment, closed the disability employment gap, and helped millions overcome job barriers, building a network of employability experts across the UK.

The initiative was celebrated at an event held today (Friday 13 September) at Pride Media Centre in recognition of over 100 local people who have gained employment through the programme, as well as those working tirelessly to support them.

The team in Gateshead and South Tyneside believes that everyone deserves a fair chance, so works hard to help people in recovery to find meaningful and sustained work.

Employers are a key part of making the initiative work, as they present new opportunities to those in the job market.

At the event, attendees learned about the incredible Individual Placement and Support programme and how they can help to make a difference by promoting the service.

Councillor Ruth Berkley, cabinet member for Adults, Health and Independence at South Tyneside Council, said: "It is an honour to host our annual event for the IPS initiative and to celebrate the amazing milestone of over 100 local people supported into employment.

"The programme has truly proven to be life changing to our communities, supporting individuals into valuable and sustainable work that has a huge impact on their health and wellbeing.

"Our current employers have also shared that recruiting IPS applicants has helped them to find motivated individuals who have the right skills for their workplace.

"The mutually beneficial programme is a perfect example of partnership working, and what we can achieve for our residents when working together."

Councillor John Adams, cabinet member for Adult Social Care at Gateshead Council, said: "Hearing from people who have shared their experiences today, it strikes me that for each of the 100 people who have gained employment, it is much more than just a job, and the impact is felt much further than the individual.

"For every person, it is the development of confidence, self-esteem and even their identity through gaining new colleagues and a sense of purpose. This then has a positive impact on the persons friends, family, peers and their wider community.

"Everyone here should be proud of the role that they have had in reaching this milestone."

Jackson, Lead Employment Specialist at Humankind, said: "What makes IPS different is that we support our applicants at every step of the way, and we often find them jobs within a few weeks.

"We meet with people, help them develop their CV, prepare for interviews, and continue to help them overcome any difficulties they may have once they're in a role.

"It's fantastic to be here today celebrating the amazing achievements of over 100 people who have used the service, and we hope it inspires more people to find out more about the support on offer."
