A warm welcome to Gateshead's Warm Spaces

Warm spaces meeting

Last week we welcomed Warm Space providers to meet at Gateshead Civic Centre. It was an opportunity to celebrate the fantastic provision Warm Spaces offer Gateshead residents and to hear from organisations we've partnered with to maximise the effectiveness of Warm Spaces this year.

Last winter, community organisations, volunteer groups and public bodies opened their doors, gave their time, and shared their resources with local residents to provide a safe, warm and welcome space. We are particularly grateful to Rev. Tom Worsley from Christ Church Felling and Brian Forbes from Veterans in the Gateshead Community for sharing their experiences of running a Warm Space over the last year. They gave plenty of food for thought for other new and existing organisations to consider when opening doors as a Warm Space, such as being adaptive to attendee's accessibility needs and matching their provision to the interests of their local community.

We have been delighted with the keen response we have had from our partners to continue and grow the Warm Space network for the winter ahead. Focus for the coming months will be on providing residents with a warm welcome and encouraging Warm Spaces within local areas to work together to ensure their opening times meet the needs of their communities as best as possible.

This year, Gateshead Council is working with a range of organisations for Warm Space providers to have the option of training in matters such as energy efficiency, support for people with substance and alcohol addictions, help available for gambling addictions and assistance for victims of illegal money lending. We hope that Warm Spaces continue to be places for whole communities to gather, and for the appropriate signposting to be made available when further assistance is needed.
