Work to start on Stargate Lane roundabout on A695

Stargate Lane diversion

Road users are being warned to allow more time for their journeys when construction work begins on Stargate Lane roundabout on the A695 early next month.

The widening works have been designed to improve the traffic flows westbound on the A695 for traffic travelling from Blaydon towards Ryton, Crawcrook and Prudhoe.

The work on the roundabout is scheduled to start on Monday 4 September and last for around 12 weeks, meaning we aim to complete the scheme in late November this year.

To reduce the number of separate traffic movements through the roundabout junction during the works, the southern section of Stargate Lane will be entirely closed to northbound traffic between the junction with Beweshill Lane and Lead Road and the A695.

This means the roundabout on the A695 will only require three way traffic lights, rather than four way, to keep traffic flowing better.

The northern section of Stargate Lane serving Stargate and Ryton will still be open to traffic in both directions.

A signed diversion (see map) will be in place for journeys normally using Stargate Lane. This will divert drivers via Greenside.

The narrow Beweshill Lane to the east of Stargate Lane is not wide enough for the expected volume of traffic involved.

The works to the Stargate Lane roundabout have been carefully planned, to ensure we avoid the lengthy closure required when works were carried out on Beweshill roundabout in the winter of 2021/2022.
