What can you do to help Gateshead go carbon neutral?
The next important chapter in Gateshead's journey to go carbon neutral puts the people of Gateshead right at the heart of it all.
Following the council recently adopting its new climate change strategy, we're looking for the people who live and work in the borough to join us to deliver the vision by making their own climate pledges.
Our new strategy commits the council to take its climate change message into every corner of every community within Gateshead - and the aim is to not only tackle our climate crisis, but also address other problems we face as a community.
We think the best way we can reach our 2030 target to go carbon neutral is to back up the council's work with individual pledges from those who live and work in our area.
The council's activities only account for 2.5% of carbon emissions in Gateshead, so it's vital our communities and businesses do their bit, to help reach our ambitious - but necessary - targets.
Choose your own way to pledge to help us be carbon neutral by 2030
To back up these individual pledges, we will be working with local communities to put together action plans for every council ward, and your local councillors will be working with their communities to bring those plans to life.
This work all follows from Gateshead declaring a climate emergency in 2019, and our ambitious target to become a carbon neutral borough by 2030. We've already made great strides towards that target, cutting the council's carbon emissions by 55%.
We know we have a huge variety of communities, with differing needs that need a range of different solutions for cutting carbon emissions.
We have some wards packed with inner city terraced streets, some with mid century housing estates, and some rural wards with a patchwork of villages, and fields and woods in between.
Sheena Ramsey, chief executive of Gateshead Council, said:
"The climate crisis is a key priority for the council - and it's also woven into all the major issues we face as a borough.
"This is a real problem with real consequences - if we don't take action, we'll have problems like more flooding, worse congestion and fuel poverty deepening.
"There is the potential to reduce inequality, improve health and wellbeing, provide access to good quality and affordable food, and support our local economy to become more resilient and fit for the future.
"We need to adapt how Gateshead functions to reap the benefits of a cleaner, greener future - both to retain and create jobs.
"Everyone has a role to play, and if we get it get it right, we create a virtuous circle to really improve people's lives and help deliver on our Thrive agenda."
