Can you donate gifts for children and young people in Gateshead?

CHRISTMAS APPEAL 2022

Gateshead residents, businesses and organisations are being asked to donate gifts for children who are supported by the Council's Children's Social Care and Early Help services.

This year, the Children's Services team at Gateshead Council are asking anyone who can from across the borough to donate gifts suitable for any age between 0 and 18 in an emergency appeal.

Due to the rising cost of living and pressures on charities, the Council's usual partner organisation for collecting donations has been unable to support this year.

Christmas can be an especially difficult time for those who access support from Children's Services, which is why it's so important that each and every child and young person is able to receive a gift.

Councillor Gary Haley, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People at Gateshead Council, said: "This festive season is predicted to be more difficult than ever for many people across Gateshead.

"At such a troubling time, it feels wrong to ask others for donations - especially as we know that many will be struggling to afford gifts for their own families this year.

"Yet, we're appealing to our residents, businesses and organisations to donate what gifts they can for children and young people, which will be appreciated even more by myself and our children.

"By ensuring that every child and young person who uses our Children's Services has a gift, even just one gift, we can support those living in challenging circumstances to enjoy the holiday."

All suitable donated gifts will be wrapped by the Children's team and given to children and young people on Christmas Day.

For those who are able to donate, please ensure that:

  • All gifts are new and unopened
  • All gifts remain unwrapped, so they can be checked and wrapped by Children's Services
  • All gifts are donated by Wednesday, 14 December at the latest.

The team will also accept cash and voucher donations to use for purchasing appropriate gifts.

Donations can be left at the main reception of the Civic Centre, or alternatively, at any of the Council's leisure centres or libraries during opening hours.

These include:

  • Blaydon Leisure Centre and Blaydon Library
  • Dunston Leisure Centre
  • Gateshead Leisure Centre and Central Library
  • Heworth  Leisure Centre
  • Gateshead Stadium
  • Birtley Leisure Centre and Birtley Library
