"Walking: Mapping Self Through Place" - An exhibition by Jane Young
The artworks in this exhibition were created in direct response to walks taken in the Derwent Valley during Jane Young's year-long artist residency at Lockhaugh Farm in Rowlands Gill.
"My practice explores walking as a creative and reflective act - a way of connecting to place, noticing nature, and responding through mark-making, materiality, and embodied attention". Jane Young, 2025
The artworks in this exhibition were created in direct response to walks taken in the Derwent Valley during my year-long artist residency at Lockhaugh Farm in Rowlands Gill. Over time, walking became both method and meditation - a means of mapping self through place. I worked slowly and intuitively, letting the rhythms of the land, weather and seasons shape my creative responses.
Exploring walking as a reflective and creative practice is a way of connecting to the land. Noticing what often goes unseen, I respond to place using a variety of art mediums.
The exhibition includes artworks created by members of the Gateshead Library Art Diamonds who walked, noticed, and responded creatively to place as part of a collaborative art project with me. These works reflect personal encounters with green spaces and offer unique perspectives on how walking can awaken creative expression and enhance wellbeing.
