" I feel like I have spent much of my career pursued by bulldozers  " Charlie Rogers

United by seven iconic bridges across a bustling quayside, Newcastle and Gateshead has been a source of inspiration for many local artists including Charlie Rogers. Charlie was a self-taught artist who lived close to Gateshead Central Library, exhibiting in the gallery many times during the 60 years that he painted. He had a unique style and character in his work which captured his love of the streets and back lanes of Tyneside and the areas near the library including the Shipley Art Gallery and Saltwell Park. This exhibition will showcase a selection of paintings, watercolours and sketches, including some artworks that have recently been discovered.

Local gallery owner Brian Rankin's new book 'Pursued by Bulldozers' documents the life, influences and art career of Charlie Rogers and will be available for sale during the exhibition. Brian has co-curated this exhibition, with support from the artist's family to ensure Charlie's legacy lives on. It will provide future generations with a record of the social, economic and industrial landscape of Northern England during the second half of the 20th century.
