General election

A UK Parliamentary (general) election will take place on Thursday 4 July 2024.  

The purpose of the election is for the public to elect Members of Parliament (MPs) to the House of Commons.

Key dates

Parliamentary constituencies 

This election will bring into force the new Parliamentary constituency boundaries which means that Gateshead's residents will be voting for four MPs.

The new Parliamentary constituencies are:  

  • Blaydon and Consett
  • Gateshead Central and Whickham
  • Jarrow and Gateshead East
  • Washington and Gateshead South

One of the new Parliamentary constituencies is wholly within Gateshead. The other three constituencies will cross local authority boundaries where the new MPs will represent residents from both Gateshead and a neighbouring authority.  

Please see below details of which wards fall into each of the constituencies. 
 

Blaydon and Consett Constituency (cross boundary constituency shared with Durham County Council) 

Blaydon, Chopwell and Rowlands Gill, Crawcrook and Greenside, Ryton Crookhill and Stella and Winlaton and High Spen wards are now in the new Blaydon and Consett constituency.  

The new MP for this constituency will represent residents in both Gateshead and Durham.

Gateshead Central and Whickham Constituency (wholly coterminous within Gateshead) 

Bridges, Chowdene, Deckham, Dunston and Teams, Dunston Hill and Whickham East, High Fell, Lobley Hill and Bensham, Low Fell, Saltwell, Whickham North and Whickham South and Sunniside wards are now in the new Gateshead Central and Whickham constituency which is wholly within Gateshead.  

The new MP in this constituency will represent residents in Gateshead.
