Ventifact
The idea for the seat comes from looking at the shapes of rocks, especially soft sedimentary rocks after they have been eroded by the wind. The name for such objects gives the title of the piece 'ventifact'. The flowing organic form has a layer of glass between the base and the top which visually lifts the piece, the glass naturally making a glowing light effect between the base and the top. Cate was born 1964 in Leeds and lives and works in Newcastle upon Tyne.
Cate Watkinson has also created two other pieces of work which are located in Gateshead. Lookout is a landmark sculpture made from glass and steel and can be found on Debenhams roof at the red mall in the Metro Centre. Sea Piece & Ice Flows, two stained glass panels situated at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, saw Cate collaborate with Mike Davis.
