The civic centre will be closed Tuesday 24 to Thursday 26 December, Tuesday 31 December 2024 and Wednesday 1 January 2025.
Information about Gateshead Civic Centre for people with Autism
Public access to the civic centre is from 9am to 5pm Monday to Thursday and Friday 9am to 4.30pm.
Appointments can be arranged in advance by contacting the relevant team, getting in touch online or call 0191 433 3000.
When attending your appointment you should come to the main reception, or where indicated by the person you're going to meet.
There are public transport links nearby at Gateshead Interchange which is a five minute walk away.
Facilities open to the public
Parking, including disabled car park spaces, is available at the civic centre car park or Charles Street car park
Public toilets, including disabled toilets and a changing place facility, are available during opening hours.
Bewicks coffee shop is open Monday to Friday 9am to 2pm.
How to find us
Gateshead civic centre is in Gateshead town centre, making it very easy to get to us.
Walking
Gateshead civic centre is a few minutes' walk from Gateshead Interchange on Regent Street. There is step-free access to the front of the civic centre - simply follow the wide footpaths behind the flagpoles. Access to the Registrars department for Births, Deaths and Marriages is well signposted at the side of the building, facing High West Street.
Cycling
There are good cycle paths all around the civic centre. This includes completely segregated paths on High West Street and cycling phases on the traffic lights at the junctions of High West Street and Charles Street and High West Street and Arthur Street. Cycle parking is available at the front and rear entrances. At the front of the building, the cycle stands are at the side of the main entrance. At the rear of the building, there are stands by the main doors or at the Gatehouse (the building at the entrance to the car park). Wherever you park, you will need to provide your own lock.
Public transport
The civic centre is a few minutes' walk from Gateshead Interchange. Any service that passes through Gateshead town centre stops at the Interchange. This includes buses from surrounding towns and cities, such as Newcastle, Sunderland, Durham and Middlesbrough, as well as local services from within the borough. The Interchange is also a stop for the Metro.
From Gateshead Interchange, cross Walker Terrace and walk up the hill (High West Street) to the pedestrian crossing at the junction with Regent Street. The civic centre will be on the other side of the road. The main entrance is set back from the road, behind the flagpoles.
By car
From the north: leave the A1 at junction 69 and follow the A184 Askew Road. Follow signs for Gateshead town centre A184. At the roundabout at the end of Redheugh Bridge, take the third exit and continue on Askew Road until you reach the traffic lights at the junction of Prince Consort Road. Turn right at the lights and continue up Prince Consort Road to the roundabout. At the roundabout take the second exit to stay on Prince Consort Road. The civic centre will be on your right. At the next traffic lights turn left onto Arthur Street. The entrance to the car park is on the left.
From the south: leave the A1 at junction 66. At the roundabout take the third exit onto A167 Durham Road. Continue along Durham Road through Low Fell for three miles, leaving the A167 to go to the Five Bridges roundabout (opposite the Suzuki garage, before going over Gateshead flyover). At the roundabout take the first exit onto High West Street. At the traffic lights turn left onto Arthur Street. The entrance to the car park is on the right.
