Granted asylum
If you have been granted refugee status, discretionary leave or humanitarian protection you will have similar rights to UK citizens, unless you have been granted discretionary leave with no recourse to public funds.
Upon receiving a positive decision, you will be required to leave your asylum accommodation. You should receive 28 days' notice of the date you must leave. Plan ahead and consider your options, which may include:
- staying with friends or family
- considering house shares
- looking for private rented accommodation
Applying to Gateshead Council as homeless
If you have received your decision and wish to stay in Gateshead, contact the Refugee and Migration Team at Gateshead Council. They can help you apply for the council housing register called Gateshead Home Choice and complete a referral to the Housing Solutions Team.

Moving to another area
If your decision was made while you were living in Home Office accommodation in Gateshead, you are entitled to apply for council housing here. Other local authorities are not required to accommodate you if you were not living in their area at the time of your decision.
If you are considering moving to another area and want to apply for emergency accommodation and council housing, consider local connection rules. Make sure you are well informed before choosing to leave the area.
