Seeking asylum
If you have claimed asylum and are awaiting a decision, you can apply for financial support and housing from the Home Office, a department of the UK Government.
Migrant Help (opens new window) is a national service funded by the UK Government. They provide free, independent advice and guidance to asylum seekers, helping with claims for support and offering general advice about the asylum process. You will need to contact them to make a claim for asylum support in the first instance. Call 0808 8010 503 or visit their website (opens new window).
If you have no other means of support you will be provided with accommodation on a 'no choice' basis. The Home Office contractor in Gateshead for housing is MEARS. Please contact Migrant Help (opens new window) to report any problems with your asylum accommodation. They will liaise with the accommodation provider on your behalf.
If you have claimed asylum, it is important to get legal advice and find a solicitor to represent your case as soon as possible. If you are eligible, they will discuss legal aid, which can cover the cost of their services.
