Hong Kong British Nationals (Overseas) BN(O)

An immigration route was launched in the UK on 31 January 2021, for people from Hong Kong who chose to take up British National (Oversees) status (BN(O)) and retain ties with the UK, before the Hong Kong handover to China in 1997.

This route allows BN(O) status holders and eligible family members to live, work, and study in the UK. They can apply for settled status after 5 years and British Citizenship 12 months after.

The North East Migration Partnership (opens new window) have been responsible for creating a Welcome Hub in the North East for those arriving on this route.

Their website provides information in English and Cantonese and covers topics including getting around the North East, Healthcare, Education, English Classes, legal advice and local attractions.

The North East Hongkongers Club (opens new window) is passionate about supporting the Hong Kong community here in the North East. It provides invaluable advice and assistance for those with BN(O) status and help people feel part of their local communities.

Gateshead residents on the BN(O) route can find information about local English classes, organisations, events, activities, and volunteering opportunities on OurGateshead - Gateshead's community website (opens new window).
