Power reduction in residential street lights

Street lights are now dimmed in the majority of residential streets in Gateshead. This will help to reduce energy use and carbon emissions and save costs. We have decided to reduce the power by 50% up to midnight, and by 75% between midnight and 5.30am in appropriate residential areas.

The eco-friendly Light Emitting Diode (LED) lights can be controlled remotely, to allow the level of lighting to be adjusted, should it be considered necessary. A reduction to 50% power before midnight will mean lighting levels are still in keeping with British Standard guidelines.

Recently street lights on main routes have been switched off between midnight and 5.30am. Each route has been inspected and road markings have been refreshed where necessary.
