Request for formal traffic safety measures outside Brighton Avenue Primary School for pick-up and drop-off times

I am writing to request that formal traffic safety measures be considered and implemented outside Brighton avenue primary school, NE8 1XS, particularly at pick-up and drop-off times.

The area outside the school gates on Liddell terrace, NE8 1YN includes zig-zag "School Keep Clear" markings, double yellow lines, and a junction between two minor roads. During peak school times this location becomes very busy, with reduced visibility, congestion, unsafe stopping and driving behaviour, which raises concerns for child and pedestrian safety.

I would like to ask the Council to consider approved and enforceable traffic management solutions for this location, such as:

• a school street scheme with timed restriction
• a permanent Traffic Regulation Order
• council-authorised cones or signage at set times
• consideration given to utilise the large area of overgrown wasteland (opposite Brighton avenue primary school located between Liddell terrace and Rawling road) to be developed into a parking facility as a traffic calming measure and promote child safety

Given the sensitivity of the junction layout and the volume of children and families using the area, I believe a council-led, formally authorised approach would provide clarity for drivers and improve safety for everyone.

Background information

This area of concern is increasing daily due to a considerable amount of "near misses" at peak times. Staff at the school feel they must place themselves in harms way and are often subjected to verbal abuse and confrontational behaviour when intervening in an attempt to have the children leave the school premises safely which is unacceptable.
