Newcastle and Gateshead were a great centre of the CWS. The Newcastle headquarters of the CWS is now the Discovery Museum; there was a flour mill and soap works at Dunston, and Pelaw was a major industrial production centre for the CWS; producing a wide range of goods including bedding, furniture, clothing, shoe polish, pharmaceuticals and textiles. It was a major employer in the region, engaging men and women in a wide range of work.
