Book a building regulations inspection

Before an inspection can be booked, you must have submitted an application explaining what the works are.

Once you have submitted an application and paid your application fee, any of the methods below can be used to book the inspection.

Prior to starting work (commencement) you must submit a 'Notice of Intention to Start Work'. This must be submitted 2 working days before the date you intend to start the work, not including the date of submission. A Notice of Commencement is required to be completed and submitted within 5 working days, when the building work has progressed to a certain point. For most domestic extensions this is usually ground floor structure level, but your building inspector can advise you once they have started the site inspections. Following your completion inspection you are required to submit a completion notice. This notice should be signed, dated and completed within 5 days of your completion along with any relevant documents/certificates required. The Notice of Completion (PDF, 209 KB)(opens new window) can be completed online, however, you are required to physically sign this form. It can be submitted by email to buildingcontrol@gateshead.gov.uk. Photographs of this form will not be accepted.

An inspection can be booked by you, the builder or agent. We cannot guarantee a specific time slot for the inspection but you can indicate if you would prefer morning or afternoon.
