Service disruptions and updates
National lockdown rules now apply in England.
Monday 11 January
Library buildings are now closed until further notice. Gateshead Libraries will continue to provide lots of online activities on Facebook and YouTube and all Gateshead library members can access thousands of eBooks and hundreds of eAudiobooks with Borrowbox.
Tuesday 5 January
Household waste collections
Household waste and household recycling collections will be not be affected by the lockdown as these are priority services. Every effort will be made to continue collections without interruption. Any crew shortages due to illness, self-isolation, or access problems due to heavy snowfall or ice, may mean that some collections are later than normal or possibly delayed until the following day, but we'll be working hard to provide a normal service as far as possible.
Other services such as bulky waste collections will also be continuing as normal. Find out more and request a bulky waste collection.
Household Waste and Recycling Centres (HWRCs)
There are currently no plans to close our HWRCs and these will remain open as normal. The odd and even car number plate access arrangements will continue for the moment. Find out about when you can access our waste and recycling centres.
Children who normally receive a free school meal but are not at school can have a packed lunch provided for them. This will be to either collect or will be distributed by the school - contact your school for more information.
For those schools remaining open for vulnerable children or children of key workers hot meals will be provided as normal for those who need them.
Our fixed play areas will be open as normal, though we advise parents or guardians to continue to observe the usual social distancing and hand sanitising measures before, during and after using them.
All of Gateshead's parks will remain open. The public toilets at Saltwell Park will also be open during the day.
Car parks will remain open. We currently have no plans to suspend parking charges and anyone using one of our car parks should ensure they purchase a ticket (or pay online) as normal.
The gritting of main and secondary roads will continue as normal and a full 24 hour service will continue to be provided.
Marriages and civil partnerships
Following the recent Government announcement, weddings and civil partnership ceremonies are unable to take place except in exceptional circumstances, for example, an urgent ceremony where one of those getting married is seriously ill and not expected to recover, or is to undergo debilitating treatment or life-changing surgery.
If you have any queries please contact this office on 0191 433 000 or email our ceremonies team at firstname.lastname@example.org
Burial and cremation services
We are operating without any changes to our burial and cremation Services. Birtley Crematorium remains at a maximum of 15 mourners inside the chapel and Saltwell Crematorium will remain at 20 mourners. We ask that face coverings are worn when inside the Chapel and we have extra cleaning services going ahead in-between services.
Unfortunately, we will not be processing applications for memorials, wall or kerb plaques until further notice. Grave searches will also not be carried out at the present time. However due to deadlines, Book of Remembrance entries will be processed but there maybe a delay in acknowledging receipt of these.
Care home visits
We are supporting care homes to implement COVID-secure visiting arrangements, where it is safe for them to do so, and alongside remote visits which will enable families to see each other while also keeping staff and residents as safe as possible. Find out more about our care home visiting guidance.
All Council run libraries are limited to services and doorstop deliveries will still be available.
Currently we are unable to provide access to public computers. Access to this service will be reviewed at a later date.
Low Fell, Rowlands Gill, Whickham and Winlaton libraries are offering Ring & Read. Felling and Dunston volunteer libraries are currently closed.
Wrekenton Library remains closed.
GO Gateshead leisure centres and gyms
All GO Gateshead leisure centres, including all gyms, will remain closed. Visit Go Gateshead for more information on membership and online sessions.
