Travel options

Walking and cycling  

The attached map shows walking routes to the Learning Centre. Cycle parking is available to the left of the centre near the car park and spare locks are available from the training office in case you forget your own.

Bus 

If you are a Gateshead Council employee you can collect a Staff Travel Pass from reception to travel by bus. Live journey times are available in the Go North East App where you can also plan your journey. Alternatively, visit www.gonortheast.co.uk (opens new window) 

There are regular buses from Gateshead to The Learning Centre which stop a short distance away.  Bus information can be sourced by contacting Traveline North East on 0870 200 22 33 between 7am and 9pm, or by visiting the Traveline North East website (opens new window).

Bike 

We have electric bikes at the Civic Centre which you can pre book to travel to the Learning Centre. Plan your cycle journey at www.cyclestreets.net (opens new window).  

Co Wheels 

Book a car for your journey at co wheels (opens new window). Where possible, try to share your journey with others to reduce the number of cars travelling to the site.  

Car 

Wherever possible, travelling by private car on Council journeys should be reduced. If you need to use your car to travel to the learning centre, remember that parking is limited, and you will not be able to access the site between 8.35am to 9.05am, and 2.55pm to 3.25pm, during school arrival and departure as there are young children accessing school during these times.  

Access to the site is restricted during school drop off and pick up for the safety of school pupils.  There are a number of parking restrictions in place on the roads around the site and these are enforced so please only park somewhere safe and legal. 

If driving and parking off-site, Whickham Thorns have parking available and it's a short walk to access the Learning Centre. Where parking in a residential area please ensure you are considerate.

On arrival

Please report to the foyer to check the information screen to confirm your room number and location as these are subject to change. 

If you are late you may find you can not access the building. Please use the intercom on the left of the doors and press for Training. One of the Workforce Development team will be in the office to answer the intercom and give you access. 

Refreshments  

Refreshments are not provided as part of courses, vending machines providing hot beverages and crisps/confectionary are located on the ground floor of the building. There is no café on site and limited shops in Dunston and Swalwell both a short drive away. Please ensure you bring your lunch/snacks where necessary. There is a small cafe, The Barn, situated in Whickham Thorns that is open Weds-Sun as an alternative
