Ceramic Tile Panel

Paul Scott's ceramic mural is an approachable and welcoming feature of the refurbished main entrance of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

The mural was commissioned to emphasise the main building, and once inside, its flowing lines help guide visitors through the busy foyer.

The mural (3 x 9 metres) consists of four panels assembled from over 1,000 hand-made and hand-painted porcelain tiles.

Undulating lines of extruded porcelain cross the panels accentuating the sense of movement through the area and lending formal unity to the design. These relief lines relate to the hilly geography of the Gateshead area and the curving course of the River Tyne. Floating between them are bendy geometric shapes enclosing semi-abstract images, like snapshots or cameos of the local environment.

The scatter of shapes lends a sense of buoyancy to the overall design, while closer inspection of the individual images reveals recognisable local sights and landmarks, and provides a rewarding diversion. Installed in 1994.
