Anne

Anne first came to Gateshead Central Library in 1987. As a lifelong reader, and with the sheer variety of books it offers, it's always made her feel like a real kid in a sweetshop.

Since she first started coming to the library, Anne has taken up more activities as what's on offer has grown. As well as being a regular book borrower, she's now an avid member of the library's Art Diamonds - a programme of arts activities for anyone who is retired - and a reading group. Plus, she's been to some fantastic events featuring globally-acclaimed authors. The library's Ring and Read service - where customers could request books to collect - was also a lifeline for her in the pandemic.

Aside from the huge range of activities now on offer, what Anne says makes Gateshead Central Library truly special is that there's often someone who knows you and who's happy to chat. That includes the incredibly knowledgeable staff, who often recognise you with a warm welcome. You can always count on them for some excellent book recommendations too.

With all this combined, Gateshead Central Library has become a big part of Anne's life. If she doesn't visit for a week or two, she really misses it.

Looking ahead to the library's next 100 years, Anne hopes it'll still be open to everyone and just as vibrant. Plus, she loves to think there'll still be lots of physical books, as you just can't beat their magic.

And how would she describe the library in three words? Enticing, wonderful and irreplaceable.
