Kath Milne
Meet Kath. She's been a part of our Gateshead Libraries team for an incredible 50 years, making her our longest-serving library colleague. In that time, she's truly become part of the family.

As expected, the fun started from Kath's very first interview when she had to walk the plank - literally. Due to building works, she had to tiptoe from the main site across a piece of wood to a temporary portacabin to meet her interviewers.
Unphased and after acing this initial meeting, Kath's first day was on 1 September 1975 at Dunston Library. One of her memories of those early days is the black and white checked uniform with a natty black collar. Thankfully, those didn't last too long.
Since then, Kath's gone on to work at Whickham, Central, Felling and Dunston Activity Centre libraries before returning to Central Library and becoming a Libraries and Heritage Engagement Officer. She's been a real pillar of the team for both customers and colleagues alike and plays a central role in helping groups make the most of everything the venue has to offer.
One of the things she's loved about her time working at the Central Library is how it's evolved with the times. Kath recalls how it used to be serious space where you might be on the wrong end of a 'shhhh' for any loud noises. These days, it's a much more inclusive space filled with the sounds of children singing at rhymetime, friends chatting at coffee mornings or residents enjoying arts classes.
Kath has fond memories too of the weird and wonderful fancy-dress she's donned along the way - from becoming a dinosaur for children's storytime to dressing as Medusa, Miffy, the Bookstart Bear as well as Jessie from Toy Story.
Looking ahead and as Gateshead Central Library turns 100 in 2026, Kath hopes lots of locals will get involved with the festival of celebrations planned. And over its next century, she's looking forward to seeing how it continues to evolve and welcome even more people through its doors.
After 50 years of service, Kath will retire in October 2025. And how will she be enjoying her retirement? Spending more time with family and friends of course... that's after her first day off, where she'll be firmly back in the library taking part in Vinted for Beginners.
