Introduction
Gateshead Council delivered its Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme to families eligible for benefits-related free school meals. In addition, the programme was made available to vulnerable young people identified through partnerships with third sector organisations and local support services, ensuring that those most in need were able to access provision.
The HAF programme, locally branded as Brighten the Day, was delivered across the main school holiday periods, including Easter, Summer, and Christmas. The programme aimed to provide consistent support to children and young people during these times, offering enriching experiences outside of the school term.
Alongside the core offer, a targeted provision known as HAF Plus was developed for young people in Years 9, 10, and 11. This element of the programme is tailored to meet the specific needs and interests of older participants and will be explored in greater detail later in this report.
A wide range of providers contributed to the delivery of the programme, offering a diverse selection of activities designed to engage children and young people of all ages and interests. These activities were complemented by the provision of a healthy meal at every session, supporting both the wellbeing and nutritional needs of participants.
