Selective and Additional Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMO) Licensing

Starts: 8 July 2024

Ends: 7 October 2024

Description

Rented property licensing helps to make sure that rented homes are safe, warm, and well managed.

The council proposes to implement rented property licensing in 16 neighbourhoods to address poor housing conditions and other issues that make the impacts of poverty worse, such as overcrowding, fuel poverty, anti-social behaviour, and crime.

The licensing types that the Council is proposing to implement are;

  • Selective Licensing for rented homes occupied by single people, two sharers and families, and;
  • Additional HMO Licensing for small Houses in Multiple Occupation; where three or four people that are not related share a rented home

Before any decisions are made, we want to hear from as many people as possible. If you live, work, or study in Gateshead, we want to hear what you think about our proposals. Whether you rent a room, own a private rented property, or just care about your community, your views matter to us. They can help us shape our future plans, prevent rogue landlord activity, maintain good standards, and ensure a thriving private housing sector and well managed housing stock for future years to come.

For more information and background to our proposals, please read the Selective and Additional Licensing Consultation Evidence Pack - Delivering Better Standards for Private Renters (PDF) [3MB] (opens new window) . Specific objectives can be found on page 60.
