Hate Crime safe reporting centres

Safe reporting centres are a safe neutral location within the community where you can report hate crime or hate incidents without having to contact the police directly. We recognise that some people might not feel comfortable or safe visiting a police station or have a disability or additional needs which means they may need support to report something that has happened.

Staff at these venues are trained to manage a wide variety of public enquiries, not just hate crime reporting, and are able to offer advice and signpost to different services if needed.

Anybody can use this facility regardless if you're a victim, witness, or just someone who is aware of information that needs to be reported.

New: Enhanced Safe Reporting Centre - Gateshead

In addition to our network of Safe Reporting Centres, Gateshead now offers an Enhanced Safe Reporting Centre in partnership with Citizens Advice Gateshead and Northumbria Police. This pilot service provides a more private, supportive environment for victims to report hate crime and receive tailored assistance throughout the criminal justice process.

What the Enhanced Safe Reporting Centre is

The Enhanced Safe Reporting Centre offers a safe, welcoming space where victims of hate crime can:

  • speak confidentially with police officers in plain clothes
  • provide evidence in a non-threatening environment
  • receive reassurance and support from trained Volunteer Chaperones
  • be signposted to specialist emotional and practical support services
  • access guidance on the court process through the Citizens Advice Witness Service

This service is designed to empower victims, reduce barriers to reporting, and ensure compassionate, consistent care from report to court.
