Hazardous waste

Waste is generally considered hazardous if it is harmful to humans or the environment. It includes items such as batteries, chemicals and oils.

Disposing of your hazardous waste

The type and quantity of hazardous waste determines how it can be recycled or disposed of.

At a household waste and recycling centre

You can dispose of the following items at our recycling centres:

  • used engine oil
  • car batteries and household batteries
  • gas cylinders
  • fridges and freezers
  • large domestic electrical appliances such as cookers, microwaves, dishwashers, washing machines
  • small domestic electrical appliances such as vacuum cleaners, kettles, toasters, lawn mowers
  • fluorescent tubes
  • televisions and computer monitors

Visit our household waste and recycling centres page for more information and opening times.

Return waste to the retailer

Household batteries can usually be returned to the retailer you purchased them from, for example you will find recycling points in larger supermarkets.

Small and large domestic appliances can often be returned through takeback schemes. Check with the retailer to see what options are available.

Unwanted household medicines or other unwanted pharmaceutical products should be returned to your local pharmacy who can dispose of the items safely.

Hazardous household waste service

We offer a disposal service for items of hazardous household waste which are not accepted at our household waste and recycling centres or by retailers.

This service includes certain household waste such as garden pesticides, chemicals and flammable solvents, which may be deemed as hazardous.

If you wish to get rid of any of these items, we require the following information:

  • your name and address
  • details of each hazardous item
  • the type of container each item is in (for example, a plastic or glass bottle)
  • the estimated size and quantity (grams, litres, millilitres) you have of each item
  • your preferred weekday to deliver the items to Campground Waste Transfer Station

You must provide these details using our general enquiry form or call 0191 433 7000.

We will then contact you to advise whether the site can accept your hazardous materials. If so, you will be asked to bring the items to on the agreed day to:
