Request a council tax refund

You can request a refund if your Council Tax is in credit. This could happen if:

  • you have overpaid
  • you have moved out of Gateshead
  • a discount or exemption has been awarded to your account
  • an award of council tax support has been made to your account
  • their has been a reduction in your Council Tax band

To complete the application form you will need:

  • your Council Tax account number
  • your bank details where payment is to be made
  • your date of birth and national insurance number

Payment will normally only be made back to the person who made payment and we will only issue a refund by secure bank BACS transfer, we do not send cheques.

If payment does need to be made to someone else, the Council Tax team will contact you to provide a reason and may issue a declaration to you to sign.

A refund will only be processed if your account is in credit and you do not owe any other amounts of Council Tax.

Apply for a Council Tax refund

This form is a request only and does not guarantee a Council Tax refund. All requests for a refund will be subject to a validation check.
