Child pedestrian training

Gateshead Council's Child Pedestrian team provides free roadside training for primary-school children in years 3, 4, 5 and 6. The training is usually given in year 3 but can be adapted for older age groups.

The programme teaches pupils the Green Cross Code and essential pedestrian safety skills including finding a safe place to cross, how to cross safely near a junction, and how to cross between parked cars if no other safe place is available.

The training is always well received by children and teachers, and our evaluation shows that pupils who have taken part in year 3 continue to show higher awareness of road safety when leaving school in year 6.
