Learning and Skills

We are Learning and Skills, one of the North East's leading providers of post-16 educational services. As part of Gateshead Council, we deliver learning in venues and workplaces across the region to help local people thrive.

Whether you're just starting out in your career, looking to change direction, or to learn something new, we offer a wide range of courses. From entry level training programmes, right through to Level 6, we can support your unique learning journey. We also offer a huge range of non-accredited and first steps learning programmes.

We're also the second largest Local Authority provider of apprenticeships in the UK. So whether you're looking to recruit an apprentice or become one, our team can help.

In September 2024 Ofsted rated us as a 'good' provider, and we're committed to providing an excellent service to learners of all ages. Join our community of more than 11,000 learners and let us help you learn, grow and thrive.

Courses we offer

We offer a range of courses including apprenticeships and professional development courses, community and family learning, employability courses for adults, courses for young people aged 14-19, essential skills (English, Maths, English for speakers of other languages and digital skills) and courses for young people and adults with special educational needs.

Choosing the right course for you

If you need help deciding which course is right for you, or you have a career goal and you're not sure how to get there, then we can help. Learning and Skills work closely with the National Careers Service to provide information, advice and guidance to our learners. It's an impartial service and completely free. You can request an appointment by calling 0191 433 2785.

Paying for your course or programme

Some of our programmes are free. For others you will need to pay. Many of the costs of learning courses are covered by a grant to Gateshead Council from external agencies. The level of support varies according to the course.
