Problems with forms and payments
We are currently experiencing technical issues with some forms and payments on our site. The issues are being investigated and we hope to have it resolved as soon as possible. We apologise for any inconvenience.

Council Tax payments

You will need

  • your account number
  • a credit or debit card

Pay council tax or Check your Council Tax balance

Payment made before 4.30pm Monday to Friday will be shown on your Council Tax account the next working day. Payment made after 4.30pm or at any time on a Saturday or Sunday will be shown on your Council Tax account after two working days.

By Direct Debit

Direct DebitDirect Debit is the easiest and most secure way to pay.

We can offer multiple options for Direct Debit including weekly, fortnightly, or monthly on the 1st, 10th, 20th, or 25th. Monthly payments can be collected over 10 or 12 months.

Set up a Direct Debit 

All Direct Debits are covered by the Direct Debit Guarantee.

Pay with your debit card by phone (or by touchtone) 24 hours a day by calling 0800 052 3455.

At your bank, telephone or internet banking

Quote your 8 digit account number as a reference. Payment should be made to:

Pay in person

Payments in person suspended

Please be aware that due to the current coronavirus situation all of our buildings are closed to the public, and all payments in person have been suspended. 

Payment may be made in person with cash, cheque, credit or debit card at the Civic Centre Cashiers desk, Ground Floor, Civic Centre, Regent Street, Gateshead, NE8 1HH.
Monday to Thursday 8.45am to 4.30pm
Friday 8.45am to 4pm

By cheque

Payable to Gateshead Council. Write your Council Tax account number on the back of the cheque and post to:

Corporate Resources, Civic Centre, Regent Street, Gateshead, NE8 1HH.
