Council to consider help for Sea Cadet Corps

Councillors are to consider granting a lease to a piece of land at Derwenthaugh Marina to the Sea Cadet Corps to allow them to expand.

The registered charity currently occupies the Derwenthaugh Boat Station at Derwenthaugh Industrial Estate, but these premises are no longer big enough to accommodate all their activities.

The Council owns a piece of vacant land next to the boat station and at their meeting next week (Tuesday 17 July) Cabinet members will discuss leasing this to the Sea Cadet Corp to provide room to store equipment and deliver on shore activities.

The Sea Cadet Corps' provides activities and training sessions based on the nautical themes and customs of the Royal Navy to large numbers of young people from across the borough, encouraging high standards of conduct.

Awarding a 35-year lease will support the Council's vision of a healthy, active Gateshead and a place where everyone thrives and offer increased opportunities for volunteering and community cohesion.
