Gateshead Council has become the first local authority in the UK to develop and launch its own funeral service.

Regent Funeral Services will offer a quality bespoke funeral service at an affordable and competitive price. All types of funerals will be offered, both religious and non-religious, and can include burials, cremations and direct cremations.

The company, which is based at Saltwell Park in Gateshead and is wholly-owned by Gateshead Council, has been set up to provide people with an affordable service with clear pricing arrangements and options that cost less than the average for a basic funeral.

Gateshead Council carried out in-depth market analysis before launching the company and this identified concerns around the Increasing cost of funerals and suggested a public appetite for greater affordability.

It also uncovered a desire for greater transparency on the costs of a funeral, and a demand for more personalised and bespoke funeral services with greater flexibility and customer focus than traditional services.

Councillor Martin Gannon, leader of Gateshead Council, says:

"As a local council, we have long experience of dealing with cremations and burials, so this is an area we are entirely familiar with. By creating our own professional funeral service, we can offer to everyone in Gateshead a comprehensive and customer-focused funeral service that operates commercially but is affordable, dignified and sensitive to people's needs.

"This new company will also address a key priority for Gateshead Council in helping people when they are at their most vulnerable. That's why we want our pricing to be completely open and transparent, so they are able to make the choices that best suit them.

"The location we have chosen for Regent Funeral Services' offices and Chapel of Rest, in the tranquil and beautiful surroundings of Saltwell Park, also reflects our desire to make arranging a loved one's funeral as peaceful, thoughtful and dignified as possible."

The service will be run by funeral director Gareth Wall, who has more than 10 years' experience of working with bereaved families.

Gareth said, "Losing a loved one is overwhelming and many people find it very difficult to know where to even begin with arranging a funeral.  It's our job to make things as easy as possible and our location in a quiet corner of Saltwell Park will, I'm sure, impress and comfort people at this distressing time.

"Our team understands the importance of sensitivity and compassion at such a difficult time, and we will go out of our way to ensure that our customers have the peace of mind of knowing that their loved ones are being taken care of."

Regent Funeral Services opened on Monday June 18.
