Carer's benefits

If you are a carer we can help support you in your caring role. There are a range of benefits, tax credits and other financial support that you may be able to receive as a carer, including carer's allowance.

We may ask to do a carer's assessment with you. A carer's assessment is free and will look at what things could make your role as a carer easier. This includes making sure you are receiving all the benefits you are entitled to, as well as information on short breaks and support available to you in the borough. For more information see our carer's assessment page.

Financial support

For an overview of the financial support available for carers please visit the Direct.gov website.

Active Access

If you are in receipt of carers' allowance and are a Gateshead resident you are entitled to discount of up to 70% off a wide range of sport and leisure activities at Gateshead Council leisure centres.

Short Break Service

The Short Break Service provides short breaks for people with a learning disability that live at home with their carers and who have an assessed need for a break from their caring role.

For further information visit our Short Breaks page.

Contact Adult Social Care

There are many ways to contact the adult social care team, both online and over the phone.

We encourage people who can contact us online to do so, as it helps to free up phone lines for emergencies or for those who don't have access to or the skills to use computers.
