Substance Misuse Strategy
We know that drug and alcohol issues continue to be a priority for local residents. If not tackled effectively, they can have often a devastating effect on individuals, their families and friends. We commit to tackling drug and alcohol misuse in Gateshead and will work with a wide range of partners, support agencies and treatment providers.
Our aim is to continue to prevent the supply and availability of drugs; signpost drug and alcohol misusers towards treatment services and we will undertake all relevant work linked with the national Government agenda.
The Community Safety Board, together with the Health and Wellbeing Board, has recently updated our Substance Misuse Strategy and Action Plan for 2017 / 22. The strategy has three shared objectives:
Reduce demand / prevention across the life course
Reduce supply / protection and responsibility
Build recovery / health and wellbeing services
Although there are shared objectives, different approaches will be taken to address alcohol and drug harm and the strategy covers separate sections for alcohol and drugs.
